Our school believes that every child is entitled to a high quality mathematics education, which will provide a foundation for them understanding the world. As a result, they will have an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

The Mathematics curriculum is organised to be fully inclusive for all children and helps them:

Develop their knowledge and understanding of Mathematical concepts whilst enabling them to practice and hone skills and methods;

Think critically and communicate their understanding;

Apply learnt mathematical skills in different contexts across the curriculum.

Develop problem solving skills useful for maths and across the curriculum.

As a result of their learning in mathematics and problem solving across the curriculum, children will:

Be prepared for applying their skills effectively in everyday life situations, in their future learning and in the work place.

Have the building blocks in place and to provide a solid foundation to lead onto secondary, further and higher education.

We provide a high-quality mathematics education by delivering Maths teaching daily, through a stimulating, oral or interactive approach. The children will experience a good balance between the basic skills and the practical application of mathematics. The children will be taught mathematics in a variety of situations and will be encouraged to see how their mathematics work can be used in the real world.

Children take part in a daily mathematics lesson lasting from 20 minutes in Reception to around 60 minutes in Key Stages 1 and 2. Each lesson will contain some mental maths practise, sometimes as an oral and mental starter or warm up to the lesson. All mathematics is taught using the same teaching cycle of teach – practise – apply – review. This gives children the opportunity to see their maths learning in a real life or problem solving context and thus deepens and embeds their learning.

Calculations are taught in a progressive way across the school. Details of the strategies taught in each year group can be seen in our Calculations Policy (see link below)

We believe that maths is a very creative subject with much scope for experimentation and innovation. This ethos is celebrated in every lesson. We also believe that maths is built on the learning blocks of some specific knowledge and understanding – namely our times tables and number bonds. Consequently, in addition to daily Maths lessons, we have a daily 15 minutes Maths Buzz session, to help develop fast recall of key number facts and provide additional opportunities for the children to practice their skills.

At Christopher Rawlins CE Primary School, we follow the statutory National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Mathematics in Key Stages 1 and 2. These can be accessed by clicking here.
